In Mexico, adult children will travel home on the evening of May 9th to prepare for the upcoming festivities and to pay respect to their mother. They honor the strong woman, who made many sacrifices while bringing them up. She taught them that the love of the family is first and foremost in life.
In Guatemela, mamás are given a public holiday off work – this was established by law in 1968. This allows mothers to relax and celebrate themselves for all of their hard work.
In El Salvador, mothers are seen as the glue that holds families together and often are in charge of their families. Salvadorans will often take a day or two off work before or after Mother's Day to travel to see their mothers and treat them to a meal out, flowers, or gifts.

In these three countries, Dia de las Madres is celebrated on May 10th, regardless of the day of the week it falls on (unlike Mother's Day in the US, which is celebrated on the second Sunday in May). Dinner reservations should be made early as Latin restaurants will be crowded on May 10. Families gather and there is lively music and a complimentary treat for all the moms. If you decide to prepare dinner for her instead, then be sure to send her flowers ahead of time to decorate the festivities.
